An overview of some of the best hikes in the Dolomites

Hiking in Dolomites

Vallunga walk

This walk is in the Vallunga valley and starts from the Parkplatz Langental- Wolkenstein car park. It is approximately 5.5 miles and will take 2-3 hours (out and back).

Vallunga is found in the famous Val Gardena area and known for the iconic Seceda ridgeline. This is an extremely manageable walk for all abilities and a great starter hike for your Dolomites trip. Take your time and enjoy the stunning nature views and the mountains around you. Say hi to some friendly cows on route too. A great and manageable hike for families.

Find the trail here.

Tony Demetz hut

Start at the top of the Sella Pass and take pass no. 526 which leads to Rifugio Emilio Comici around approximately 40 minutes. The path then becomes a little more tricky which winds up Mount Sassolungo to Col Ciaulonch. You will then reach path no. 525 leading to a second mountain hut, Rifugio Vicenza. Take a rest here for a coffee or some lunch.

Carry on the steepest part of the hike following on route no. 525 to reach the Tony Demetz hut. After a stop at this lovely mountain hut follow the same route back down or get the only standing cable car in South Tyrol (known scarily as the coffin lift!).

The hike will take approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes and is around 6.2 miles in total.

Seceda

Seceda and it's ragged ridgeline are the staple of the Dolomites and the picture where as soon as you seen the image of the ridgeline, you immediately recognise this as the Dolomites. Well, you can hike along the ridgeline and experience this beautiful spot close up in all its glory.

From Ortisei you can catch the cable car to take you all the way up to the Seceda ridgeway. First take the Ortisei-Furnes cable car and then switch to the Furnes-Seceda cable car. Alternatively you can take the Col Raiser cable car. The hike will take approximately 1 hour to reach the top. If you prefer a challenge you can start your hike from the Col Raiser cable car station and this will take approximately 2-3 hours one way.

From the cable car station take trail no.1 and enjoy the stellar views of the Sella mountain group such as the mighty Sassolungo along the way. Carry on along route no.1 until you reach a sign for route no.6 until you reach the top. Follow the same route back down stopping at the Troier Hutte for a well deserved aperol or hugo spritz.

This is a circular trail leading from Canazei and will take approximately 4 hours and 7.8 miles. Find the trail here.
